Walberton Place Care turn the village blue for DAW2019!
Walberton Place Care Home in the village of Walberton near Arundel are celebrating Dementia Action Week 2019 with a busy schedule of dementia friendly activities and fundraising events. The newly opened care home, in the West Sussex village specializes in the care of elderly residents living with dementia. The well-being and activities team have planned plenty of activities for people to enjoy throughout the week and invited the local community to come and join in the events.
“We are looking forward to a fun week here at Walberton Place,” said Home Manager, Cheryl Rolt “All my staff team is very passionate about caring for people living with dementia. We’ve hosted several Dementia Friends sessions in the local area in the run-up to Dementia Action Week including at the local primary school ”.
This year Dementia Action week is about getting children involved, so 28 children from Year 5 at Walberton and Binsted Primary School visited the home to become Dementia Friends. The Dementia Friends information session was led by Chery Rolt, Home Manager at Walberton Place Care Home and Peter Rolt, Customer Relations Manager. The children will join the 17 million Dementia Friends worldwide, working to make communities more inclusive and supportive of people affected by dementia. By the end of the session, children had a good understanding of what dementia is and wrote their own ‘dementia friend promise’. Their promises included to “be kind” and to “talk about happy memories together” and “help people but not take away their independence”.
The highlight of the week will be Friday’s ‘Turning Walberton Blue Day’ #TWB2019, when children from the Primary School will be dressing in blue to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society. The team from Walberton Place Care Home have enlisted the support of local shops and businesses, with local equestrian suppliers ‘De Livery’ entering into the spirit by adding forget-me-not flowers to their shop window display.
Dementia Action Week is Alzheimer’s Society’s annual event this year from 20-26th May, with the aim of encouraging people, workplaces, schools, and communities to take action and improved the lives of people living with dementia.
