Residents at Carpenders Park Care Home near Watford were treated to a very special day out as part of the home’s ongoing Make a Wish initiative, with a visit to the Kew Gardens, a botanic garden in southwest London.
The Make a Wish initiative at Carpenders Park Care Home, part of the Country Court group, is dedicated to creating memorable experiences for residents. From boat trips and book launches to off-road driving and family tea parties, this program is a vital aspect of the Carpenders Park person-centred care approach. Staff take the time to understand each resident's unique hobbies and interests, tailoring activities to match their individual preferences.
Among those who took part were residents Punitha and Pearl, both of whom had long hoped to visit the iconic botanical gardens.
'Punitha, who grew up in Sri Lanka, has a deep appreciation for nature. Though she originally wished to visit the Eden Project, the distance made that difficult. Instead, the team worked together to organise a visit to Kew Gardens – a more accessible but equally beautiful alternative.' Commented Wellbeing Coordinator Heather Reid.
“The flowers and plants reminded me of home,” Punitha shared, her eyes lighting up. “I had the most special day. Thank you for taking me.”
As the youngest of five siblings, Punitha fondly recalls her sister taking her to gardens in Sri Lanka during her childhood. Since moving to London, she has never had the chance to explore Kew Gardens – until now.
Pearl also joined the trip with her husband, Sidney. She had only a vague memory of visiting Kew Gardens as a child and hadn’t returned since.
“After Sidney and I raised our children and then our grandchildren, life was busy,” Pearl said. “We never found the time to go back. This day meant everything.”
'The outing was a moving experience not just for Punitha and Pearl, but for everyone involved. Staff and other residents who accompanied them were deeply touched to be part of the day.' Commented Wellbeing Coordinator Heather Reid.
One resident reflected, “It lifted my spirits. I’ve been telling my family all about it.”
‘The Make a Wish initiative at Carpenders Park is part of our home’s wider commitment to person-centred care – supporting residents to stay connected to the people, places, and experiences that matter most to them.’ Commented Interim Home Manager Julie Wicks.
