A Wish Fulfilled: Alpacas Bring Joy to Residents at Fairfield Manor

Fairfield Manor Care & Nursing Home near Hitchin recently welcomed some unexpected but very welcome visitors—two alpacas, John Boy and Gary, from Corn Hill Alpacas—as part of a special Make a Wish visit for residents.

The ‘Make a Wish’ initiative at Fairfield Manor, part of the Country Court group, is all about creating meaningful and memorable experiences that reflect each resident’s unique passions and interests. Whether organising special outings, marking personal milestones, or arranging heartfelt gestures, the initiative forms a key part of the home’s person-centred approach to care. Our team takes the time to get to know each resident — their history, hobbies, and hopes — to ensure every wish is as individual as the person behind it.

Eliza, owner of Corn Hill Alpacas, kindly brought the alpacas to the home, where they quickly became the centre of attention. Residents were able to feed and stroke them, and the alpacas’ calm nature meant they were even comfortable travelling in the lift—giving those unable to come downstairs the chance to join in.

‘The visit was particularly meaningful for resident Stella, who has had a lifelong love of animals. Stella previously worked as a veterinary receptionist and continues to enjoy regular visits from her family and their schnauzers, Winston and Clemmie. These visits have remained an important part of her routine, especially since moving to Fairfield Manor.’ Commented Wellbeing Coordinator Lead Nichola Lazenby.

On the day, Stella was visibly delighted. After noticing the alpacas, she smiled and said, “Oh look, what is that?” She spent time interacting with them and later said simply, “Beautiful. I love them.”

Other residents shared similar enthusiasm -

Michael Crook, a former zoologist, remarked: “They are wonderful animals.”

Patricia Bell commented: “What a marvellous afternoon. They are beautiful creatures.”

Family members Pat and Warren added: “It was so lovely to see all the residents engaged with the alpacas and seeing them happy. We thought it was fantastic.”

“We’re always looking for meaningful ways to support residents’ interests,” said Home Manager Shibu Thomas. “Animal visits are always popular, and the alpacas brought something new and memorable for everyone involved.”
