Ruby Lodge Care Home is a vibrant and lively home in Thirsk. The staff team go above and beyond to create meaningful connections between residents, which is where volunteers such as Mick bring additional warmth, companionship, and laughter to residents. “It was my oldest daughter who suggested I look into volunteering at Ruby Lodge,” Mick explains. “She knew the home had just opened and thought it would be a good fit for me.”
With previous experience as an instructor working with people of all ages, including older adults, Mick brings valuable understanding, empathy, and a natural connection with the residents at Ruby Lodge Care Home.
“A typical visit starts with a chat,” says Mick. “I like to share stories from my life, add a little humour, and just be a friendly face. Sometimes we play games if they fancy it. It’s simple things, but they really matter.”
For Mick, the most fulfilling part of volunteering is seeing the difference it makes. “What’s been truly rewarding is realising I can create some smiling faces. That’s what I aim for—if I can lift someone’s mood, it means a lot to me.”
Volunteering has also been an eye-opener. “I’ve learned more about dementia and how debilitating it is. I haven’t spent much time on the upstairs floor yet at Ruby Lodge, but even brief encounters with residents living with dementia have been very moving.”
Mick speaks highly of the atmosphere at Ruby Lodge. “To be honest, I’m blown away by how lovely and kind everyone is to each other. The staff are always so welcoming—there’s such a caring environment here. They’re doing a fantastic job.”
Mick hopes to inspire others to take up volunteering. “I’d say go for it. There’s so much personal reward—seeing someone smile, brightening their day, making a new friend. You get a lot back from giving a little bit of your time.”
Mick’s motivation to volunteer also stems from a personal story. “My mum was in a care home, and I sadly missed her passing. Now, I feel like I can do some good—it gives me a sense of purpose.”
If you feel inspired by Mick’s story and would like to get involved, we’d love to hear from you.
