Selwood House Care Home in Charlton Down, Dorchester recently welcomed residents, relatives, friends, staff, and members of the local community to its Back in My Day event. The afternoon focused on reminiscence, local history, and community connection, all of which play an important role in supporting the wellbeing of residents, particularly those living with dementia.
The event began with a performance in the main lounge by local sea shanty group Dorset Wrecks. Their lively set was well received, with several residents joining in with the singing, including individuals who are typically less vocal. Families also commented on how encouraging it was to see their loved ones taking part.
Clare Twiss, Home Manager at Selwood House commented.
“Today’s event took my breath away. Not only were Dorset Wrecks brilliant, but it truly showed the power of music. Seeing residents who normally struggle to converse singing every word, tapping their feet and clapping along was incredibly moving.”
Following the performance, guests visited the home’s onsite pub, The Boathouse, where local historian Steve Wallis delivered his talk Dorset Old and New. He shared stories and photographs illustrating how the local area has changed over time, prompting discussion and reminiscence among attendees.
The care home’s chef provided a selection of freshly baked cakes for guests to enjoy during the afternoon.
Customer Relations Manager Keiley Godfrey shared.
“It was wonderful to see such a mix of residents, families, neighbours, and local friends spending time together. Events like this highlight the strong sense of community we have here at Selwood House and the value of creating opportunities for people to share memories.”
