Greenwood Court Care Home Heartwarming Wish for Resident Who Never Had a Teddy Bear

Greenwood Court Care Home in Great Baddow recently granted a very special wish for one of their residents, Rosemary, to get her very own teddy bear through their Make a Wish initiative.

Now in her 90s, Rosemary shared with staff that she had never owned a teddy bear. Born during wartime, her family simply couldn’t afford such luxuries. ‘There were more pressing matters at the time than a teddy bear.’ Rosemary said.

The ‘Make a Wish’ initiative at Greenwood Court, part of the Country Court group, is all about creating meaningful and memorable experiences that reflect each resident’s unique passions and interests. Whether organising special outings, marking personal milestones, or arranging heartfelt gestures, the initiative forms a key part of the home’s person-centred approach to care.

Inspired by this simple comment, the wellbeing team at Greenwood Court arranged for a special trip to the Build-A-Bear Workshop in Chelmsford, where Rosemary had the chance to create her very first teddy bear—just the way she wanted.

‘Rosemary was spoilt for choice at The Build-A-Bear Workshop, but she loved every second of it; she didn’t stop smiling. She picked out her bear, named him Horris, and dressed him in clothes just like her late husband used to wear—smart and gentlemanly like. She even added a lavender scent to help her feel calm and even chose her favourite song, ‘It’s Been A Long Long Time’ by Louie Armstrong, to play from inside the bear.’ Commented Urwah Chaudhary, Wellbeing Coordinator Lead.

“I didn’t think I’d have to be 90-something to finally get a teddy bear, he’s taken me a lifetime to get. Rosemary said. “How can I ever thank you enough for today?”

“Rosemary’s wish was really special as something said so simply in a conversation became such a beautiful memory for her to treasure,” said Urwah Chaudhary, Wellbeing Coordinator Lead.
