Heartlands Care & Nursing Home Treats Resident to Emotional Return to Birmingham City Football Club

Heartlands Care & Nursing Home in Yardley was proud to arrange a heart-warming day out for resident Mike, a lifelong Birmingham City supporter, by treating him to tickets to see his beloved Blues play live. The team organised transport, refreshments, and made sure his wife could join him so they could share the special experience together as part of the care homes ‘Make a Wish initiative.

The Make a Wish initiative at Heartlands Care & Nursing Home, part of the Country Court group, is dedicated to creating memorable experiences for residents. From boat trips and book launches to off-road driving and family tea parties, this program is a vital aspect of Heartlands person-centred care approach. Staff take the time to understand each resident's unique hobbies and interests, tailoring activities to match their individual preferences.

Football has always been a significant part of Mike’s life. He has supported Birmingham City all his life, proudly calling them the only team he has ever supported. Before he was married, Mike rarely missed a match-travelling with his friends, soaking up the excitement and enjoying every moment of being part of the crowd. One of his favourite traditions was having a Guinness at The George pub before kick-off.

Mike commented on his wish:
“My favourite part was having a Guinness in The George and feeling the atmosphere again-everyone getting ready to go to the football. I loved chatting and socialising with people in the pub. I really enjoyed the whole game, but the atmosphere was the best part. I loved cheering for my team again.”

He also said how special it was to have his wife by his side, making the day even more meaningful.

After the match, Mike was delighted to get into a warm taxi-especially as it was so cold outside. He returned to Heartlands with a big smile, having relived a treasured part of his life.

Mike’s all-time favourite footballer, Trevor Francis, has always been a hero to him as a Blues supporter. Being back in the stands reminded him of the passion, community and joy that football has brought him over the years.

Mike added:
“I would like to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for making this day so special. It means so much to me, and I’m so grateful you made it possible for me to go to something that’s such an important part of my life.”

The team at Heartlands Care & Nursing Home said it was a privilege to bring Mike’s wish to life, and supporting residents to reconnect with meaningful memories is at the heart of everything they do.
