A heartwarming moment recently unfolded at Baycroft Flitwick Care Home, near Ampthill, when resident Beryl had her lifelong dream come true—to meet a real owl. The special encounter was organised by staff as part of the home’s “Make a Wish” initiative.
The Make a Wish initiative at Baycroft Flitwick, part of the Country Court group, is dedicated to creating memorable experiences for residents. From boat trips and book launches to off-road driving and family tea parties, this program is a vital aspect of Baycroft Flitwick's person-centred care approach. Staff take the time to understand each resident's unique hobbies and interests, tailoring activities to match their individual preferences.
“Beryl is well known among staff and residents for her deep love of owls,” explained Lead Wellbeing Coordinator Bernie Hoo-Hing. “Her room is filled with owl ornaments, and her walking aid even features a beloved owl-themed bag. So, when we asked what her one wish would be, she answered without hesitation: ‘To meet an owl.’
The home arranged for a surprise visit from Simon, a bird handler, who brought along his team of majestic birds of prey. As Beryl entered the room and saw the owls waiting, her face lit up with joy. She was invited to sit in a special chair, positioned slightly apart so she could have a quiet, up-close experience.
Interim Home Manager Rebecca Wells described the touching moment: “Simon gently placed a falconer’s glove on Beryl’s hand and introduced her to Pepper, a two-year-old Barn Owl. She sat quietly, listening with fascination as Simon explained more about the owl. Beryl gently stroked Pepper’s chest and even placed a soft kiss on the owl’s head. It was incredibly moving to watch.”
Simon, the owl handler, was equally touched by the interaction. “Beryl had a natural calming presence,” he said. “Even my assistant, who’s been working with me for six months, hasn’t been able to handle Pepper in that way. The bird was completely at ease with her.”
The magical experience continued as Beryl was introduced to Biscuit, a magnificent seven-year-old Bengal Eagle Owl. Despite the owl’s large size and commanding presence, Beryl showed no fear—she confidently held him on her gloved hand, smiling throughout.
Throughout the experience, Beryl shared a series of heartfelt and humorous comments that melted the hearts of everyone present. Among her touching words were: “You’re my best friend in the whole world,” and “If I could be anything, I’d be you.” At one point, she looked at another owl and quipped, “Is that your girlfriend?” She ended the visit with a tender “Ah, let me kiss you,” and when told it was nearly dinner time, she insisted, “I can go without dinner.”
Lead Wellbeing Coordinator Bernie Hoo-Hing reflected on the moment, saying, “This was such a meaningful and person-centred experience for Beryl. These are the moments that remind us why we do what we do—because everyone deserves to feel seen, heard, and celebrated.”
