Make a Wish Brings Ruby Lodge Residents Back to the Iconic Blackpool Tower Ballroom

At Ruby Lodge Care Home in Thirsk, a few residents recently realised they all shared the same heartfelt wish to return to the iconic Blackpool Tower Ballroom. After reminiscing about the happy times, they once spent there with their partners, the care home’s ‘Make a Wish’ initiative brought those memories to life.

With the support of their families, who helped choose special outfits for the occasion, the residents enjoyed an unforgettable day back at the ballroom dancing to the sounds of the grand organ.

The ‘Make a Wish’ initiative supports residents to enjoy meaningful experiences tailored to their interests – from boat trips and book launches to off-road driving and afternoon teas. It’s an important part of Country Court’s person-centred approach to care, with staff taking the time to understand each resident’s life story and passions.

Christine, one of the residents who had wished for the visit, reflected on the experience saying:

"I'm just talking it all in, I have many happy times here with my husband Michael."

On the journey, Christine’s family shared old photos of her past visits to the Tower, sparking fond memories and conversation.

For the other ladies, being back at the Tower Ballroom was filled with joy and fond memories. One smiled and said, “My husband couldn’t dance – he would jump around almost, he could never glide!”

The visit also sparked excitement about future trips, with one resident saying, “Can you drop me off here again next week? Me and my husband came here often. I had the best one, you just couldn’t replace him.” Another resident shared, “I wish I was 50 years younger; I would be gliding across the dance floor.”

Wellbeing Lead, Lydia Reynolds who helped organise the wish commented.

“This wish really meant a lot to our residents. The Tower Ballroom is such a special place full of happy memories for them and their families. They’d often chat about it while watching old dance films in our cinema room, so being able to take them back there was just wonderful. It was a day full of music, dancing and laughter – one we’ll all remember for a long time.”
