Making a Splash at 100: Eileen’s Wish Comes True at Ruby Lodge Care Home

Recently celebrating her 100th birthday, Eileen Burnley, a resident at Ruby Lodge Care Home in Thirsk, had one special wish — to get back in the swimming pool and, perhaps, even lead an exercise class. As part of the Ruby Lodge’s ‘Make a Wish’ initiative, her dream was brought to life with joy, laughter, and splashing.

The ‘Make a Wish’ initiative at Ruby Lodge, part of the Country Court group, is all about creating meaningful and memorable experiences that reflect each resident’s unique passions and interests. Whether organising special outings, marking personal milestones, or arranging heartfelt gestures, the initiative forms a key part of the home’s person-centred approach to care. Our team takes the time to get to know each resident — their history, hobbies, and hopes — to ensure every wish is as individual as the person behind it.

Re-visiting an old hobby at 100 years old:

Eileen has always lived life with boundless energy and joy,” commented Customer Relations Manager Kirsten Idle. “Her recent ‘Make a Wish’ moment reminded us all that age is just a number. Thanks to the dedication of our Wellbeing Team, the support of Eileen’s family, and the generosity of the team at Thirsk and Sowerby Leisure Centre, Eileens wish to swim again became a reality.

During her special visit to the local leisure centre, Eileen was treated to a celebratory experience — complete with complimentary pool passes, a birthday sash, a ‘100’ balloon, and even a caterpillar cake.

I never thought when I was teaching all those children to swim years ago, I’d be here at 100, swimming again,” Eileen said with a smile. “Can we go to the bigger pool next time?

From the moment Eileen had stepped into the pool, we could tell she meant business,” laughed Home Manager Holly Hunton. “She cheerfully shouted, ‘bye bye!and before anyone could count to three, she dived straight into the pool — giving us all quite the surprise!

Eileen’s wellness week didn’t end at the swimming pool. She has long expressed an interest in exercise and even hinted at teaching classes herself, so Lydia arranged a fun-filled seated Zumba session for her and fellow residents. With props including tambourines, ribbons, and shakers, it was a lively, musical experience that had everyone smiling.’ commented Customer Relations Manager Kirsten Idle.

“I’ve had more exercise this week than in many years,” Eileen said, glowing. “It makes one feel alive!”

Born in Morley, Leeds, and educated at Harrogate Ladies’ College, Eileen trained as one of the UK’s earliest occupational therapists during the Second World War, helping returning soldiers regain independence through crafts such as woodwork and basket weaving. After marrying in 1950, she raised two sons and continued her passion for helping others — teaching swimming to children, co-founding a Housing Association in Leeds, and later managing care properties.

Her commitment to volunteering continued well into her 90s. At the age of 94, Eileen was named the British Heart Foundation’s Regional Volunteer of the Year, and she only stepped back from her charity work during the 2020 lockdown — at the age of 95. She lived independently until she was 99½ and moved to Ruby Lodge to be closer to her family.

From all of us at Ruby Lodge — Happy 100th Birthday, Eileen! Here’s to many more wonderful moments to come.’ Commented the team at Ruby Lodge Care Home.
