Moat House Care Home Residents Celebrate 80 Years of VE Day

Residents at Moat House Care Home in Great Easton, Essex, marked the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a private and heartfelt gathering on their terrace, celebrating the memories of those who lived through the war years and bringing happiness to everyone involved.

The morning started with live entertainment by a talented local singer, who performed classic wartime songs, perfectly setting the tone for a day of reflection and celebration. The home's terrace was beautifully decorated with Union Jack flags, bunting-style tablecloths, and custom-made placemats showcasing iconic wartime images—depicting street parties, the Royal Family on the Buckingham Palace balcony, and vintage newspaper front pages.

Truly special garden party:

We wanted to create a truly special experience just for our residents,” said Wellbeing Coordinator Kerry Pennock. “Many shared stories from their youth, with several having lived through or served during the war.

Resident Bill, aged 103, who served in India during the war, recalled a defining moment upon his return: “There was a campaign in the Daily Express urging the government to bring troops back.” After returning home, Bill married his beloved wife, borrowing a dress from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Film Studios for the wedding.

Joyce, aged 97, served as a Wren and worked on submarines during the war. She met her husband while serving in the forces—a touching love story made in extraordinary times.

Many other residents were children during the war and fondly recalled the street parties and celebrations that followed the victory. Dee remembered, “I celebrated with my friends while my parents joined the grown-ups. It was such a joyful time after so much fear.”

Several residents also noted how their parents shielded them from the harsh realities of war, preserving their innocence during those difficult years.

Adding to the day’s cheer, the celebration coincided with resident Peter’s 92nd birthday. Overjoyed, Peter believed the entire event was in his honour and was so touched he even helped tidy up afterward, showing that age is just a number.’ Commented Wellbeing Coordinator Kerry Pennock.

This year’s VE Day celebration was truly special,” said Home Manager Tara Crowe. “By keeping it a private event just for our residents, they were able to fully enjoy and soak in the moment. It was a joyful day filled with laughter, music, and cherished memories.
