Residents, staff, and families at The Grove Care Home near Grimsby came together to honour the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day with a heartwarming afternoon of remembrance, music, and celebration.
The care home hosted a traditional 1940s-style street party, complete with themed decorations, Union Jack bunting, and a reminiscence board crafted by resident Margaret, capturing life as it was during wartime Britain. Margaret’s thoughtful display, which sparked heartfelt conversations among attendees, has now been chosen for exhibition at Louth Museum, where it will continue to educate and inspire.
‘Our residents enjoyed making sandwiches they remembered fondly from the era, paired with beloved British classics like trifle, jelly, and blancmange. Families joined in the festivities, sharing stories and laughter over afternoon tea. Staff embraced the spirit of the event by dressing as Land Army girls, creating an immersive and joyful experience for all.’ Commented Wellbeing Lead Donna Burke.
The event also featured a touching reminiscence session and an uplifting sing-along, with many residents joining in enthusiastically.
“This has been a lovely day—going back down memory lane and learning about everyone’s past experiences has been truly special,” said one resident, reflecting on the day’s events. Another added, “It brought back so many memories—things I hadn't thought about in years. I’m so glad we could share them.”
‘At The Grove Care Home, we regularly host themed events as part of our commitment to celebrating the life stories of our residents and providing meaningful, person-centred care.’ Commented Customer Relations Manager Ros Wells.
