Ruby Lodge Care Home in Thirsk recently held a successful Mayfair event, welcoming residents, their families, local businesses, and members of the wider community for an afternoon of entertainment, shopping, and connection.
Held in the home’s picturesque gardens, the Mayfair featured a vibrant selection of local stalls, offering everything from handmade crafts to sweet treats.
· The Gourmet Graze Cart, serving up colourful sweets and fresh fruit
· Facepainting and glitter tattoos by Amy, a big hit with younger visitors
· Go Indian Spice, offering aromatic cooking spices
· White Horse Lavender, who generously gifted a bouquet to the home
· CC Vintique, showcasing handmade jewellery
· Curious Basket, with a range of handmade clothing and accessories
· Claire’s Children’s Books, delighting families with classic and contemporary stories
· Pearson’s Ice Cream Van, keeping everyone cool and refreshed
Live music from local singer Paul Moore brought everyone together, with residents and visitors dancing along in the sunshine. “Paul went down a storm,” said Home Manager Holly Hunton. “We’re thrilled to welcome him back for our upcoming Summer Family Funday.”
The day also featured traditional games and fun activities. Guests enjoyed Hook-a-Duck, using ducks from Ruby Lodge’s own collection, while the tug of war proved popular with children and parents. One of the most talked-about moments was the sponge throw, where brave members of the care team volunteered as targets to raise money for resident activities and Andy’s Man Club, who were in attendance to raise awareness around men’s mental health.
The raffle draw, including a giant Stitch teddy as the star prize, built excitement throughout the afternoon, while the bottle tombola was a consistent crowd favourite. Ruby Lodge’s
kitchen team served refreshments all day, with the bacon sandwiches receiving plenty of praise.
“This has been the best day. I never thought I’d be dancing to Elvis Presley in the garden when I first came here for respite.” – Resident.
“Superb event – and the bacon sandwiches were spot on.” – Son of a resident.
“I never realised you could have so much fun at a care home.” – Grandson of a resident.
“What a welcoming and helpful team – they haven’t stopped smiling all day.” – Stallholder.
Home Manager Holly Hunton reflected on the success of the day: “It was wonderful to see so many people enjoying themselves — residents, families, and visitors from the local area all coming together. The atmosphere was full of warmth, and we’re so proud of the team and volunteers who made it happen. We’re already looking forward to the Summer Fair.”
