Step by Step: Ruby Lodge Walks Raise Funds for Activities and Defibrillator

Residents, staff, families, and even four-legged friends have been putting their best foot forward at Ruby Lodge Care Home in Thirsk this summer, taking part in a series of sponsored walks to raise funds for two meaningful causes: extra-special resident activities and a community-accessible defibrillator.

With warmer weather arriving and many residents enjoying time outdoors, the team at Ruby Lodge felt it was the perfect opportunity to organise an inclusive fundraiser that everyone could take part in — not just staff.

Our residents love walking and being out in the fresh air, so we wanted to make sure this was something they could be part of,” said Lydia Reynolds, Wellbeing Coordinator Lead. “It’s been great to see the whole community come together to support it.”

Walks have taken place throughout the month, with staff walking in the evenings — often joined by their children — and daytime walks alongside residents. Ziggy, the therapy dog, even made a special appearance on one of the walks, much to everyone’s delight. Local nursery children from Lara Nursery also joined in, creating a joyful intergenerational moment.

Family members, team members from nearby Bateman House Care Home, and generous supporters from the local community have all been involved.

‘So far, the fundraiser has brought in nearly £400, with donations still coming in. One staff member kicked things off by donating £100.’ Commented Home Manager Holly Hunton.

Feedback from residents has been overwhelmingly positive:

· Eileen said, “The fresh air is wonderful — let’s go faster!

· Graham shared, “I enjoyed a walk with my daughter, and we didn’t stop!”

· Gloria added, “Great idea — we need a defibrillator.”

· Billy was thrilled to see the visiting dogs, stroking them and reminiscing about his pets: “What lovely dogs there are here.”

· Rosemary summed it up with, “I’m so grateful I got to join in.”

While a few more walks are still scheduled, the team is already thinking about what’s next.

We’re considering a ‘biking day’ challenge,” said Lydia Reynolds, Wellbeing Coordinator Lead. “We might set up a stationary bike in the entrance and track how many miles staff can ride throughout the day. We’ll share more details soon!”
