Residents, families, and staff at The Grove Care Home near Grimsby have proudly taken part in a community poppy project for Utterby Church, creating a wonderful 100 knitted poppies in honour of Remembrance Day.
‘The idea began at the weekly community coffee mornings held at Utterby Church, which I attend regularly as part of my role. The church invited everyone in Utterby and the surrounding villages to contribute knitted poppies for a remembrance display, encouraging the whole community to join in honouring those who served in the War.’ Commented Customer Relations Manager Ros Wells.
‘Residents, staff, and families all got involved. Everyone enjoyed knitting side by side, sharing stories, comparing stitches, and the friendly challenge of reaching our goal of 100 poppies. ‘Commented Wellbeing Lead Donna Burk.
‘What made this project special is that although each poppy followed the same pattern, everyone turned out unique, just like the individuals who made them.’ Commented Customer Relations Manager Ros Wells.
By the time the residents, staff, and families finished the knitted poppies, they had surpassed the goal of 100 in total. ‘Together, we created 130 poppies, the pride and joy across the home was incredible.’ Commented Wellbeing Lead Donna Burk.
The poppies were added to a display inside Utterby Church for the Remembrance Service on Sunday 9th November 2025. Residents, families, and members of the church came together on the day to admire the display, watch the live BBC service, and enjoy refreshments.
‘We’re so grateful to Utterby Church for welcoming us into the project, and they plan to include us in more community activities in 2026.’ Commented Customer Relations Manager Ros Wells.
