At The Laurels Care Home in Draycott, one resident’s childhood memory recently came to life thanks to the home’s ‘Make a Wish’ initiative. Alice, who fondly remembers cycling as a little girl, was supported by Wellbeing Coordinator Katie Salway to enjoy a bike ride once again - this time with a little help from the team at Trishaw Rides - Wells.
The ‘Make a Wish’ initiative, which runs across the Country Court group, gives residents the chance to enjoy meaningful experiences tailored to their interests-from boat trips and book launches to off-road driving and afternoon teas. It forms an important part of The Laurels’ person-centred approach to care, with staff taking the time to get to know each resident’s life story and passions.
Alice’s wish was made possible thanks to the support of Trishaw Rides - Wells, a volunteer-led service run by Wells Community Network. The initiative offers free rides on a specially adapted electric tricycle, designed for older people and those with limited mobility. It allows passengers to enjoy the outdoors and explore the local area with the support of trained volunteer pilots.
Alice took to the trishaw for a peaceful ride through the countryside, joined by her daughter Kathryn. Katie Salway, who helped coordinate the day, said:
“It was a joy to see her out in the fresh air, enjoying the moment with her daughter by her side.”
As they travelled through the lanes, Alice smiled and waved to passersby.
“I don’t think I could pedal anymore like I did when I was little,” she laughed.
Kathryn added:
“I’ll always remember this moment. It was special for Mum-and I’m so grateful to everyone who made it happen.”
“We’re incredibly thankful to Trishaw Rides – Wells for helping us bring this lovely experience to life for Alice and her family. It’s these moments that really matter.”
