Staff at The Grange Care Home in Newport near Saffron Walden recently made a wish come true for resident Betty. She wished for her very own wishing well to take pride of place on the garden terrace at the care home. Deputy Nurse Tina Davison heard about Betty’s wish and wanted to make it come true for her. As part of the Country Court ‘Make a Wish’ initiative, residents are given the opportunity to tell members of staff about somewhere they had always wanted to go, something they’ve always dreamed of having or a special activity they would like to do.
Resident Betty loves gardening and takes great pride in looking after and monitoring the home’s plants. ‘Betty queried why we didn’t have a wishing well in our garden as she thought it would be a lovely addition to have one for everyone to enjoy’ commented Activity Coordinator Yvonne Gray.
‘Once I heard Betty’s wish about the wishing well I felt a sudden urge to make this happen and give back to the residents. So, I found one I thought Betty would like and our maintenance man Ray varnished the well and made a nice stand for it. He also made Betty her very own name plaque with upcycled wood to personalise it further’ commented Deputy Nurse Tina. ‘When it came to revealing the surprise to Betty all the staff stood in front of the well and then moved aside for the grand unveiling. Betty was over the moon, she gave me a kiss on the cheek as a thank you’
‘Betty has since been shopping with her daughter for flowers that she can proudly display in her wishing well. She has bought flowers such as daisy’s and lobelia.’ Commented Activity Coordinator Yvonne Gray.
