Celebrations at Summer Lane Care & Nursing Home

Staff and residents at Summer Lane Care & Nursing Home in Weston Super Mare were delighted to welcome members of the local community and families to see their newly refurbished and extended home. Guest of honour was Cllr Sonia Russe, Mayor of Weston Super Mare and consort Mr David Ray. Guests enjoyed a tour of the newly extended and refurbished home commenting ‘how wonderful it all looked’, ‘what beautiful décor’ and ‘how tremendous the transformation has been for the home’. Alongside tours, guests also enjoyed live entertainment across the home and a wonderful selection of drinks and canapes after their show arounds.

Vimal Samuel, Home Manager, commented on the day:

“The Open Day was a great success, and it has been wonderful to finally reveal our new extension and see our residents, families and guests interact with the new spaces.”

Summer Lane Care & Nursing Home now has its own pub, two newly refurbished lounge and dining areas, an entertainment suite, a private dining room and a bistro café. The extension has created an additional seventeen bedrooms, all with en-suite walk-in shower rooms, taking the capacity of the home to one hundred and twenty residents.

“Summer Lane Care & Nursing Home is our flag-ship home in the Southwest,” said Al-Karim Kachra Co-CEO Country Court. “This year marks the tenth year that Summer Lane has been part of the Country Court Group and we’ve seen the home go from strength to strength under the leadership of our Home Manager Vimal Samuel. We are very proud of the high standards of care we provide for people here, many members of staff have over ten years of service and that is a testament to the family-led atmosphere. It’s wonderful to see the home fully refurbished and we know our residents will benefit from the new communal spaces”.

The Open Day was the first time the residents were able to use their new lounge and dining areas on both the ground and first floor. To celebrate, they were entertained by guest singer Chantel, who transported people back through the ages with a variety of old classics. Families and residents enjoyed singing and dancing along to the music with activity coordinator Suzie commenting,

“All the residents & families loved the live entertainment and have enjoyed finally using the newly extended areas for activities. For people living with dementia communication can sometimes be hard. So, music is a wonderful and powerful tool that can promote positive feelings and help them connect with others. This is why the music and movement sessions are so great to involve the residents in”, commented activity coordinator Jane.

Alongside the entertainment residents and families took part in the Country Court ‘Baked with Love’ cake-tasting competition. People were able to try 3 different cakes and vote for their favourite. The cakes were Lemon Drizzle, Cherry Chocolate Cake & Walnut Cake. All the cakes were homemade by David McCartney and his wonderful staff team as part of Country Court’s annual competition. Activity coordinator Suzie mentioned,

“The favourite was definitely walnut cake which went down swimmingly.”
