With Bateman House Care Home opening in Uttoxeter this summer, our Home Manager Erica Neal is offering her top tips to help families take the stress out of finding and moving into care.
Erica has spent over 43 years working in the care sector and has been a Registered Home Manager for more than 30 of them. She’s passionate about making a positive difference to people’s lives and supporting families through what can feel like a daunting process.
“My lovely mum encouraged me to work in care and she’s been my biggest inspiration ever since,” said Erica. “When I won the Great British Care Award for Registered Home Manager of the Year in 2022, I dedicated it to her. She was so proud.”
Drawing on her experience, Erica shares her six top tips for families starting the journey into care
“It’s never too soon to talk about care. A gentle chat now can make decisions feel easier later on.”
“Websites are helpful, but nothing beats popping in to see the home for yourself. You’ll get a real feel for the place – and the people.”
“From meals to daily routines, it’s okay to ask whatever’s on your mind. A good care home team will always take time to help.”
4. Get advice on funding:
“Care fees and funding can feel confusing, but there is help available. We can point you in the right direction or help you get started.”
“If it’s possible, involve the person who’ll be moving into care in the decisions. Their wishes matter.”
“A few familiar things – a blanket, a favourite photo or a comfy chair – can help make a room feel like home from day one.”
“I’m so proud to be opening Bateman House,” added Erica. “We’re here to offer expert care in a warm, homely setting — and we’ll be here to support families every step of the way.
