On Friday 18th November resident Brian Carter, aged 72 from The Pines Care & Nursing Home in Hove was surprised by Home Manager Tiago Conceicao with tickets to see Metallica Reloaded at the Brighton Concorde. Brian is a huge music fan but has experienced several health issues. Staff at the care home were keen to take a person-centred approach to Brian’s care and were looking for ways to use his interests to improve his low mood.
Tiago explained. “Brian has a passion for collecting radios and speakers, he is always listening to the radio station "planet rock". This struck up a conversation between myself and Brian. Through this, we started talking about music and how much he enjoyed live concerts and his love for rock and roll music. As soon as I told him we were going to a concert Brian’s face lit up.
For the past 20 years, Brian’s health has prevented him from having the opportunity to visit a live music venue. When we admitted Brian to The Pines from hospital, he was struggling with both his mental and physical health. The recent change in Brian has been terrific. To see him mobilising with a walking stick and joining other residents in the lounge instead of spending his days in his room is a great improvement. He is now building meaningful relationships with staff and his fellow residents.”
Resident Brian commented on the day “I enjoyed this evening so much, if possible, I would like to go and see more concerts! I never asked to go, but after going I just want to go for another one and enjoy myself! Thank you so much to Tiago, Jack and Tina from Concorde, it was special!”
The Pines Care & Nursing Home expressed their thanks to Concorde 2, who warmly welcomed Brian and Tiago, in particular, to thank Tina who very kindly explained the facilities, gave them a point of contact and escorted them to the front row so Brian could see all the concert.
