Dedicated staff at Beech Lodge Care & Nursing Home in Holbeach St Johns helped residents achieve their wish this week. As part of the care homes ‘Make a Wish’ initiative, residents were given the opportunity to tell staff about somewhere they had always wanted to go or a special activity they’d always wanted to do. Residents Charles, Alan and Walter knew straight away that they would love a trip to the pub.
“Due to the current coronavirus pandemic we can’t take residents out to the pub so we decided to bring the pub to them” said Home Manager Karen Atillo “We managed to borrow some pub themed accessories from our sister care home in Spalding and our Wellbeing Team came up with a range of pub games for everyone to enjoy. We had a such an enjoyable day, it was lovely to see the everyone smiling and joining in with the fun.”
Chef Manager Ivon created a traditional pub lunch menu for the day, residents had a mouth-watering choice of Beer battered cod with chunky chips and mushy peas, hand-carved gammon ham with a fried egg, grilled tomato, pineapple ring, garden peas and house chips or Homemade steak and stilton burger with cheddar cheese and smoked back bacon with fries, onion rings and relish. For dessert, there was a choice of strawberry meringue, lemon meringue pie, black cherry cheesecake or Jam sponge and custard. Staff set up a bar area and poured drinks to order as residents enjoyed socialising over their lunch.
Residents spent the day playing pool or dominoes and chatting with their friends over a drink just as they would in the local, On seeing the photos of the day on the Beech Lodge Facebook page one relative commented “This is a brilliant idea, their faces say it all, I have never seen so many smiles in one place. Keep it up and let’s have more of them!” Another person said, “How lovely is this, you put an enormous amount of effort in to create a homely atmosphere”.
