Care Home residents get back in the saddle at local leisure centre

Residents from The Grove Care Home in Waltham got their new year off to a great start with a trip to Grimsby Leisure Centre for an inclusive multi-sport session. Age was no barrier to the residents who were keen to try out the assisted cycles and get their new year’s resolutions to stay fit off to a great start.

Residents, aged from 82 to 92, enjoyed using a range of assisted cycles, led by practitioners, there was a range of adapted cycles for all abilities, including wheelchair users to use. After the session, they had time to relax in the coffee shop and enjoy a cup of tea before heading back to the care home.

We had a fantastic time,” said Wellbeing and Activities Coordinator Julie “the residents were talking about their trip out all day and saying how much they’d enjoyed it. Many had not used a bicycle for years and loved getting back in the saddle”.

The daughter of one resident commented “I have just rung The Grove to say a huge thank you on behalf of my sister and I, as mum was very enthused tonight on the phone about her day out. She loved it!”

Residents hope to make the Wednesday session a regular part of their weekly activities. The session at Grimsby Leisure Centre is a fun, multi-sport and activity session led by Care4all adult learning disability therapy team and Lincs Inspire. The group first started as a small support group for rebound therapy sessions. The class has now expanded to offer badminton, table tennis, toning tables, arts and crafts as well as dance therapy and the assisted bikes.
