Lyncroft Care Home Recognises Outstanding Contribution from YOPEY Befriender

Sophie has been visiting Lyncroft Care Home for two years as part of the YOPEY Dementia Befriender initiative. This important intergenerational work is coordinated by Tony Gearing MBE of the charity YOPEY, which builds relationships between care home operators and secondary schools. Established in 2012, YOPEY gives young people the opportunity to contribute to their communities through volunteering to provide company to elderly people living in care homes.

Most YOPEY Befrienders volunteer for one year before handing over to their successors, but Sophie enjoyed spending time with the residents, listening to their stories, gathering advice, and gaining valuable experience, so she continued to volunteer far beyond the typical time.

As Sophie’s final exams at Thomas Clarkson Academy were fast approaching, YOPEY Founder Tony Gearing MBE decided to organise a surprise awards ceremony to thank her for her commitment and for the companionship she brought to so many residents.

Lyncroft Care Home Manager Clair arranged for all Sophie’s friends among the residents and staff to gather in one lounge, ready to surprise her when she arrived for her usual weekly visit. YOPEY also invited Sophie’s mum Mandy, her sixth-form director Alison, and the new High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire to be part of the celebration.

At one point, Tony Gearing MBE interviewed Sophie and asked her to share stories about her favourite residents. Everyone enjoyed a good laugh as Sophie affectionately pointed out “naughty Roz,” adding with a smile, “that probably says more about me.”

Sophie was presented with certificates and a voucher, with thanks to local retailer Robert Goddard for their very kind donation of the prize.

After the presentation, refreshments were served, and Sophie and her guests enjoyed chatting with residents.

“YOPEY Befriender Sophie and the residents of Lyncroft have enriched each other’s lives for two years. From my visits to the Wisbech care home, I know Sophie loves going there, and the elderly residents love having her youthful presence. They all get on so well,” said YOPEY Founder Tony Gearing MBE. “The YOPEY charity is grateful to Lyncroft’s supportive staff for embracing this intergenerational friendship and making it so rewarding for everyone involved.”

Home Manager Clair added warmly, “Sophie has become part of the fabric of life here at Lyncroft. The residents light up when she arrives, and it’s been a joy watching those friendships bloom. She brings a spirit and kindness that is truly rare, and we are all so proud of her.”

Because of the friendships and connections she’s made, Sophie plans to continue her visits. Her time at Lyncroft has not only been meaningful for the residents but has also given Sophie valuable life experience she’ll carry with her into the future.
