The team at Priory Court Care & Nursing Home have been making the most of the summer sunshine and preparing their garden for the annual Country Court Care in Bloom gardening competition. For their garden project, the team at Priory Court have joined forces with local street artist Damian Nicholson, to transform a dull wall into a fabulous beach area for residents to enjoy.
“Although we have Burnham-on-Sea seafront right on our doorstep here at Priory Court” explained Senior Carer, Julie Keep “some of our residents are unable to make the journey to the beach, so we’ve bought the seaside to them.”
The wall-art features Burnham’s Low Lighthouse, a local landmark, and a stunning sunset across Bridgewater Bay that’s completely transformed the area. Residents were fully involved with the project and shared ideas with Damian about his plans for the wall. They have been busy planting hanging baskets and planters and together with staff have created a beach-hut, beach and ‘rock pools’ to finish off the whole project. The grand opening event was attended by Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Cllr Andy Brewer, Deputy Mayor Cllr Bill Hancock, and Town Crier Alastair Murray.
“The grand-opening of our beach project was a great success” said Steve Duncan, Customer Relations Manager at Priory Court “Over the summer we will be inviting local people to come and see our wonderful transformation for themselves, starting with our Local MP James Heappey, who came to meet the staff and view our project. Resident Ken gave him the official tour and they discussed all the new aspects of the garden.”
The garden facilities were put to full use at the home’s recent Summer Fair. Burnham and Highbridge’s Mayor and Mayoress Andy and Lorna Brewer opened the event before residents, family members and local people enjoyed traditional stalls and garden games. Local community groups also got involved with the fair, with Burnham-on-Sea Brownies running the cake stall and local businesses donating raffle prizes. The whole event raised nearly £450 which goes towards special events and days out for residents.
