RAF veteran celebrates 100th Birthday at Somerset House Care & Nursing Home

Vera Harper, a resident at Somerset House Care & Nursing Home in Wheldrake, recently celebrated her 100th birthday. She was surrounded by friends and family on her special day and had a wonderful time. Vera was delighted to receive a card from His Majesty King Charles III and enjoyed a delicious cake made by the care home’s Chef Manager Neil Standish.

Vera’s daughter Denise commented “This is her 5th year at Somerset House where she is happy and healthy. She is given kind and loving care, from the excellent staff in every way. Both my mother and myself would like to thank you all for your kindness and patience and arranging this very special day for us both’

Vera grew up in the countryside in a small village called Norton St Philip in Somerset. When the second world war broke out in 1939 both Vera and her sister Joan joined The Royal Airforce. It was during this time that she met her husband to be Norman who was in the RAF Bomber Command.

A few years later Vera and her husband welcomed daughter Denise who was born in 1946. The family then moved to Cheshire where they settled down for a while and Vera worked as a Secretary to the manager of the Prudential Insurance Company. Vera stayed in this role until she retired.

Once retired Vera and her husband Norman moved to the beautiful county of Somerset where they all settled happily. Norman sadly passed here at the age of 80 years old and Vera continued to live alone for 14 years. At 95 years of age Vera moved into Somerset House where she is now closer to her daughter Denise and family.
