A special wish was brought to life for Joan, a resident at Somerset House Care & Nursing Home in Wheldrake, as she enjoyed the chance to experience live classical music once again.
The Make a Wish initiative, run by Country Court, is all about creating meaningful moments that reflect each resident’s interests, hobbies, and life story. Whether it’s a special outing, celebrating a milestone, or arranging something more personal, the team takes the time to understand what truly matters to each individual.
While chatting with residents and staff over coffee and a slice of chocolate cake, Joan shared memories from her past, saying, “I worked all my working life in a printing factory.” She explained how she worked at the start of the printing process in a quieter area, carefully keeping an eye on ink and paper levels to ensure everything ran smoothly, away from the louder, rhythmic sounds of the machines further along the line.
Outside of work, Joan loved getting out and about. She fondly remembered driving around her hometown in her treasured Triumph Spitfire, but what she missed most were trips into Hull with her friend to enjoy live classical music performances.
Wanting to bring that special experience back to life, the team at Somerset House arranged a trip to Beverley Minster. There, Joan enjoyed a live performance by soprano Louise McPhee and pianist Helen Wilcox. The concert featured a beautiful programme of music written entirely by women. As the performance began, Joan sat quietly, completely absorbed and clearly enjoying every moment.
Afterwards, Joan said, “That was brilliant, I really enjoyed the concert.”
Before heading home, Joan spent time exploring the textile artwork on display inside the Minster, which tells stories from the Bible. The day was rounded off with a late lunch of fish and chips, making it a truly memorable outing.
Wellbeing Coordinator Jeannette Tosney said, “It was a joy to see Joan reconnect with something she loves so much, and a reminder of how meaningful these moments can be.”
