Residents and staff at Beech Lodge Care & Nursing Home in Holbeach have been enjoying their very own Olympic Games with a range of Olympics and sport-themed activities. Named the ‘Country Court Oomph-lympics’ (through a combination of the 2 companies running the event), residents have been trying their hand at Boccia, bop-fit, artistic swimming and other events.
The team at Beech Lodge decorated their home with flags from different countries around the world and an Olympic banner to set the scene. Beech Lodge got their Olympic themed games underway by creating their own Olympic torch and medals, residents divided into three teams and got quite competitive scoring points for each event. They made a video of their events so families could see what their loved ones had been enjoying during the week. The games were a great success with residents who enjoyed chair-based synchronised swimming, carpet bowls and volleyball.
Activity Coordinators from Country Court, the operator behind Beech Lodge, have been receiving training from partner activity provider, Oomph Wellness to help run the events. Each home across the country will be leading residents in Boccia, bop-fit, artistic swimming and an open event of their choice. The Beech Lodge cat, Ginger scooped the prize for best mascot, sporting an Olympic themed hat, he was somewhat reluctant but enjoyed his moment in the limelight. The winners were announced at the closing ceremony and presented with their prizes.
“We had a fantastic week of sporting activities,” said Home Manager Karen Atillo. “The residents have all been very keen to get involved and join in. The synchronised swimming produced much hilarity. It’s been great to see people having fun and hearing so much laughter in our home.”
The Oomph-lympics are just one of the many activity initiatives that Country Court provide for residents. Providing stimulating activities in care homes is one of the most crucial elements of maintaining health, happy residents. By enabling residents to participate in meaningful opportunities, their physical, emotional, social, cognitive and sensory skills are strengthened. These five skills complete the wellbeing of a person and help maintain good physical and mental health.
Each home in the Country Court Group completed their ‘Oomph-lympics’ events throughout the month, with prizes awarded for the best in class of each category. Updates will be posted regularly on the Country Court Facebook page.
