Residents at Oakview Lodge Care & Nursing Home in Welwyn Garden City recently welcomed two very special visitors, as therapy alpacas Doctor Pepper (12) and Jimmy Lee (8) spent time at the home, bringing the benefits of animal-assisted therapy directly to residents.
Animal therapy plays an important role in care settings, with studies showing it can help improve mood, reduce anxiety and feelings of loneliness, and encourage social interaction particularly for those living with dementia. The visit to Oakview Lodge provided a meaningful and engaging experience for residents.
The alpacas spent time with residents in communal areas as well as offering more personal one-to-one visits in bedrooms, ensuring everyone had the opportunity to take part. The experience created special moments throughout the home, from sparking fond memories for Janet G, who previously walked alpacas herself, to bringing visible joy to Michael, who is cared for in bed and was able to interact closely with the animals.
Residents responded warmly to the visit, with many enjoying the calm and gentle nature of the alpacas. Joyce was delighted when the alpacas visited her room, describing the experience as a wonderful surprise.
