Eccleshare Court Care Home on Ashby Avenue in Lincoln are celebrating Dementia Action Week 2019 with a packed schedule of dementia friendly activities and fundraising events. The nursing and care home, close to Hartsholme Park specializes in the care of elderly residents living with dementia. The well-being and activities team have planned plenty of activities for people to enjoy throughout the week and invite the local community to come and join in the events.

We are looking forward to a fun week here at Eccleshare Court” said Home Manager, Susannah Barker-Milan “All my staff team are very passionate about caring for our residents living with dementia. The well-being and activities team have put a lot of thought and care into selecting a wide range of music, dancing and social activities that everyone enjoy and join in with”.

On Monday 20th May the care home is kicking things off with a visit from The Ukulele Band of Lincoln who are coming to perform for the residents. The musical theme continues on Tuesday with popular local singer Phil Gray coming in the morning to perform for the residents. Music has been shown to have a dramatic effect on people living with dementia, it’s power to soothe, stimulate and bring to mind long-forgotten memories is often observed by care staff and family members.

Residents will enjoy a party in their very own pub ‘The Letters Inn’ on Wednesday, there will be refreshments, games and entertainment from a staff member who will be singing and playing his guitar. Thursday is Election Day at Eccleshare Court; residents will be voting for members of their new ‘Resident’s Council’. A number of residents have volunteered to be part of the new body which will be the ‘voice of the residents’ at Eccleshare Court. They will be voting for a Chairman and Deputy to represent them at Resident’s meetings with the aim of giving residents the means to be even more actively involved in the running of their home.

The highlight of the week will be Friday’s 12-hour Dance-a-thon with non-stop dancing to raise money for the Resident’s comfort fund, which provides funding for special day trips or entertainment. Residents, staff and family members will be joined by local community dance groups who will be donning their dancing shoes to raise awareness of dementia in the community. Residents have been preparing for the week of celebrations by making Forget-me-not flower badges to sell.

Dementia Action Week is Alzheimer’s Society’s annual event this year from 20-26th May, with the aim of encouraging people, workplaces, schools and communities to take action and improved the lives of people living with dementia.
